What is Water Footprint?

Water has a vital importance for all living beings. Irrigation, bathing, washing, cleaning, cooling, and processing. As a result, a great amount of water is consumed and polluted. On a global scale, although most water usage occurs in agricultural production, the amount of water consumed and polluted in industrial and local sectors is also significantly high.

In this regard, various efforts have been made to reduce this consumption. The necessity of measuring in order to reduce consumption has emerged. As we know, we cannot manage anything we cannot measure. The process to be carried out is referred to as the Water Footprint.

Water footprint can be seen as a comprehensive indicator of freshwater resource allocation, in addition to the traditional and limited water withdrawal measure. The water footprint of a product is the volume of freshwater used to produce the product, measured over the entire supply chain. It is a multidimensional indicator that shows water consumption volumes and polluted volumes according to the type of pollution; all components of the total water footprint are specified geographically and temporally.

Blue water footprint refers to the consumption of blue water resources along the supply chain of a product. “Consumption” refers to the loss of water from a surface water body in a catchment area. Losses occur when water evaporates, returns to another catchment or the sea, or is incorporated into a product.

Green water footprint refers to the consumption of green water resources.

Grey water footprint represents pollution and is defined as the volume of freshwater required to assimilate the load of pollutants, taking into account natural background concentrations and existing ambient water quality standards.

Water footprint is an indicator of freshwater use that looks at the indirect water use of a consumer or producer.

The ISO 14046 Standard, developed by ISO, provides guidance on the Calculation of Water Footprint. Businesses can carry out their work according to the ISO 14046 Standard to determine their Water Footprints. As a result of this process, in order for the calculated Water Footprint to be internationally recognized, verification services should be obtained from organizations that provide verification in accordance with ISO 14046. What is the ISO 14046 Standard?

ISO 14046 Water Footprint Standard is a standard that provides guidance on the calculation of the amount of freshwater polluted and the amount of water recovered as a result of direct and indirect activities.

ISO14046 sets specific rules and requirements for organizations, products, and processes to calculate water footprints. The ISO 14046 Water Footprint Standard is an environmental calculation technique used by companies that produce products, production, R&D, or services as a result of their activities to measure the amount of water they consume.

How and From Whom to Obtain the ISO 14046 Certificate?

ISO 14046 Certificate is a Report, Certificate, or Document given as a result of verification at a certain level of assurance based on evaluations conducted by International Audit Firms, by checking the calculations made by companies that have calculated the Water Footprint for a specific Monitoring Period according to the ISO 14046 Standard and have met the relevant requirements of the standard.
